Mamata targets private hospitals for spreading fear over HMPV

Human Metapneumovirus (HMP), a virus similar to the coronavirus, has made its way into India, raising concerns among the public. The virus, which originated in China, has reportedly infected at least seven people in India, with one case confirmed in Kolkata. The spread of this virus has caused alarm, as it brings back memories of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc globally.

HMP is a respiratory virus that primarily affects young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The symptoms are similar to those of the flu and other respiratory illnesses, making it difficult to distinguish without proper testing. As a result, there is growing anxiety among the public, especially after the Kolkata case came to light.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal has weighed in on the situation, blaming some private hospitals and institutions for unnecessarily alarming the public. According to the CM, certain private circles are taking advantage of the situation by spreading fear about the virus, even calling mild symptoms like a slight fever as dangerous. "People need to be cautious of these institutions that are just out to make money," the CM stated, urging the public to not panic.

While the situation is being monitored closely, medical experts have clarified that while the HMP virus should not be ignored, it is not as severe as the COVID-19 virus. The symptoms can usually be managed with proper medical care, and the risk to the general public remains low as long as proper hygiene and precautionary measures are followed.

The CM's remarks have sparked a debate about the role of private healthcare in exacerbating public fear. Health officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious symptoms but to avoid falling prey to unnecessary panic. The situation is still being monitored, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
